Summary
Weymouth, situated in the centre of the Dorset coastline, has been a significant port since medieval times and a major resort since the 18th century.  The town has a busy commercial centre and a number of thriving industrial estates.  Long historic links with the Navy and defence have fostered the growth of many hi-tech and engineering businesses.  Portland is attached to Weymouth by a narrow stretch of the famous Chesil Beach.

Communications
Weymouth is situated 7 miles south of Dorchester on the A354, where it joins the A35 south coast trunk road.  There are direct rail links to London and Bristol and there is also a seasonal high speed catamaran to the Channel Islands.  Portland is linked to the mainland at Weymouth by the A354 and offers commercial deep water harbour facilities at Portland Port.

Commercial land
Weymouth offers a variety of business space and has the established Granby Industrial Estate on the western outskirts of the town.  Mercery Road offers a larger development potential at the eastern side.  Osprey Quay at Portland will host the 2012 Games and currently offers employment sites covering retail, leisure and employment.  A number of industrial buildings are currently under construction together with a new marina.
