Economy

The Dorset area boasts a strong business economy which is dominated by the conurbation of Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown and Wimborne located in the south east of the county.  Outside of this conurbation there is a network of towns that are principally focused on tourism, creative and agricultural based industries.  The strength of the local economy lies in the diverse mix of sectors and balance of service and manufacturing businesses, with major employers including:

  • Sunseeker International
  • Nationwide Building Society
  • JPMorgan
  • BAE Systems
  • Cobham Plc
  • Bournemouth University

Local employers have access to a skilled, well-qualified and stable workforce, with unemployment rates well below the national average. There is a strong culture of enterprise and innovation within the area and employment in higher skilled occupations has been steadily increasing during the last decade.  The Poole and Bournemouth conurbation is also in a strong position to see major growth of its knowledge economy.

Bournemouth and Poole as well as the other major Dorset towns offer a wide variety of cost effective workspace facilities, with excellent communication links which include Bournemouth Airport and the ports of Poole, Portland and Weymouth.  A wide variety of organisations, mainly from London and the South East of England, are moving to this beautiful part of the United Kingdom and reaping the rewards of contented, motivated staff.
